BOOK REVIEWS
In common with most other writers, HW undertook book reviews for a number of periodicals and newspapers as a means of supplementing his income from royalties, though he was never a prolific reviewer. More often than not, he would be contacted and asked if he would write a set number of words on a book or books – and invariably, given his reputation, these would be ‘country’ books, or books about animals. Occasionally though, if a book or writer interested him enough, he would offer to write a review to help sales. HW could be somewhat idiosyncratic in his reviewing, and sometimes they reveal more about himself than the books under review.
As a one-time regular contributor to the Eastern Daily Press, and as editor of The Adelphi, HW mentioned a number of books which are often short notices rather than reviews as such. These too have been included for completeness. There are also three reviews and one other talk relevant here that HW broadcast for the BBC, taken from the final scripts in the BBC Written Archives Centre, which were first published in the HWS's Pen and Plough: Further Broadcasts (1993; e-book 2014).
We do not suppose that this list is definitive; if any reader knows of other reviews, or has copies of reviews that we do not have, please contact the
These reviews and notices present another aspect of HW as writer, and have never before been collected. A comprehensive list of the books reviewed is presented below in three indexes: author, title and the periodical/newspaper in which the review was published. In most cases there are links from each index to the relevant periodicals page where the review itself is available; usually this is a scan of the original review, but it is presented as plain text where the original is unavailable or its quality too poor for reproduction. Other information from the literary archive pertaining to the reviews, such as scans of the (often worn or otherwise damaged) dust wrappers of the review copies, or drafts of the review itself, both manuscript and typescript, has also been added when available. Many of the books have been long forgotten, and some perhaps deserve to be better remembered; while other titles still resonate today.
As an aside: HW had an endearing habit of giving away appropriate review copies as presents, and his son Richard has several inscribed to him on his birthdays – one of them five years after the book itself was published and reviewed!
